The Naval Submarine League would like to extend our condolences to the family of President George H.W. Bush. In 1944, LTJG George Bush, then a 20-year-old naval pilot, ejected from his flaming airplane and was saved from potential capture by the Japanese by the USS Finback, a diesel submarine operating in the Pacific. This began a lifelong appreciation of submarines and in 1986 then-Vice President George Bush was given an Honorary Life Membership in the NSL. His thank-you note is on display in the NSL Library.
