Photo Contest Awards
The Naval Submarine League sponsors an annual Undersea Photo Contest. The top 4 winners receive cash awards ($500, $250, $200, $50) and may appear in NSL publications and the NSL website.
Information on Submitting to the Undersea Photo Contest
Undersea Photo Contest – 2023 Award Winners:
First Place: MMA2(SS) Jay Matzek, USN
This photo was taken one night in January before a USS San Juan deployment out of Groton.
Second Place: STS2(SS) Spencer Ocampo, USN
The USS MISSISSIPPI (SSN 782) conducting trials in Alaska in 2023. The boat just got out of the shipyard last year and has been a very active boat in the pacific fleet. Hooyah Mississippi!
Third Place: MC1(EXW/PJ) R. Ryne Rhodes, USN

The USS TORSK (SS 423) in drydock at the Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point Shipyard in Sparrows Point, Maryland, in 2011. USS TORSK is maintained by Historic Ships in Baltimore and the Torsk Volunteer Association (a local SubVets group).
Submission Information to the Undersea Photo Contest:
The Naval Submarine League (NSL) selects 4 submarine-related photos each year with cash awards of $500, $250, $200, and $50. Winning entries may be displayed on the NSL website’s home page, in the programs for the NSL events, and for the cover of an issue of the NSL’s quarterly magazine.

Entries must be received by October 1, 2024.
- While all entries should relate to some aspect of the undersea warfare community, we encourage you to be creative in your choice of what you shoot and how you shoot it.
- Photos that convey a sense of patriotism and pride in the U.S. Submarine Force are particularly encouraged.
- Horizontal perspective shows best on the website.
- Enhancements (including AI) are discouraged.
- PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT PHOTOS YOU HAVE NOT PERSONALLY TAKEN!
- Limit 5 submissions per photographer. Digital submissions must be at least 300 dpi (dots-per-inch).
- The photos must be previously unpublished.
- Attach submissions to an email as a PDF or JPG, preferably both.
- Send an email by 10/1/2024 to support@navalsubleague.org with the photographer’s name and rank/rating (if applicable)
The NSL is a non-profit, membership organization that promotes the importance of submarines and the undersea to our national defense.
